From Herodotus to the Digital Age, travel has been a source of inspiration for writers. Garry Marchant will discuss his over 30 years of experience as a professional travel journalist. A self-described ‘jet-set pauper’, his work has taken him around the globe, to every continent and countless nations. He will share some of his more outrageous stories from the road, many of which can be found in the recently published collection of his work, The Peace Correspondent.
Marchant will explain the essentials of how to make it in what many consider to be a dream job. What does it take to survive as a travel writer? What are the ethical issues involved in taking sponsored vacations? How has the profession evolved over the years, and what the challenging facing the travel writers of the future?
Garry Marchant is a freelance writer who is addicted to travel. Raised in Canada, he has also lived in Tokyo, Hong Kong, Sydney (Australia), Vanimo (Papua New Guinea), Rio de Janeiro and Paris. He currently contributes to publications in Canada, the US, Australia, Hong Kong and Tokyo. He is the author of The Peace Correspondent and his work has also appeared in guidebooks and anthologies like Away From Home: Canadian Writers in Exotic Places and Our American Cousins, and has received numerous international awards for writing and photography. To date he has visited some 244 countries and every continent.
